In today’s
competitive world, companies use many different ways to maximize their profits.
Many stores prefer to hire attractive people rather than hiring knowledgeable
skill workers. Employing only attractive employee will lead to discrimination
to other workers. It not only will devalue their work abilities, and will given
negative influence toward teenager. According to Marshal Cohen, it is true that
by hiring good looking workers will help business gain more profits. However,
businesses or stores should not only hire people based on exteriors because
this might lead to decimation and negative to teenagers.
Retail stores like Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister,
American Apparel, American Eagle, Aeropostale. All these names are probably
extremely familiar to young preteens and teenagers of this generation. But the difference
is what reactions people come up with when the names of these brands are spoken
aloud. In order to understand the
appended of stores hire more attractive workers instant of knowledgeable
workers, it is related to Cohen’s argument. Cohen is a senior industry with the NPD Group, a market
research firm, which sounds like he advises stores on how to make the most
money. however, Cohen’s majority claims
is by hiring based on looks is necessary in order to compete with other retail stores. By saying that stores are in business to make
money, so that they have to do what they have to do. what Cohen is really
saying is that it is so hard to make a profit in retail, so it is okay to
discriminate. According to Cohen’s argument, companies
desire to make more money by employing people who are able to present companies’
image well. Also, it helps to create an environment through having a
fashionable market. Obviously, the method can capture consumers’ attention. While
the intentions of these commercial businesses are perfectly understandable, it
is necessary to know the many disadvantages of hiring only good looking employees.
Hiring good looking workers causes
issues of discrimination. Some companies, like the popular Abercrombie &
Fitch, only give opportunities to handsome men or pretty girls. Olophius Perry,
a director of an office, says, “If you’re hiring by looks, then you can run
into problems of race discrimination.” Here, he clearly points out the issue of
discrimination. If companies only hire attractive people, other people, who are
competent, are being discriminated. Most importantly, the attractive employees
may not work as hard as others who are rejected by these businesses. The
attractive employees realize that having good appearances allows them to obtain
work even though they are lazy. Obviously, hiring attractive people produces
discrimination and decreases the productivity of workers.
Furthermore,
companies, judging on one's appearance, set a bad model for teenagers. These
businesses do not care about the specific skills or experience of a worker;
they only pay attention to a person's looks. Because of that, many teenagers
will think that having experience or knowledge is not important anymore. They
may pay the majority of their attention to their clothing instead of studies;
some attractive teenagers may give up pursuing a secondary education because
they can easily find work at these stores, and their abilities or skills will
be limited by their lack of academic knowledge.
Meanwhile, teenagers may apply companies' standards to their own lives.
An employee describes one of the standards of his company, "Everyone is
supposed to look like a 110-pound model." His description shows that most
of the workers should be skinny in order to be hired. This idea may become
pervasive to teenagers, who can then affect teenagers' diets; they will follow
the standard by limiting their diets. If companies continue to judge workers'
appearances rather than competencies, teenagers will harm themselves both
physically and emotionally through health problems or lack of education.
Businesses
should not only hire employees who have good appearances. Judging based on looks;
companies will produce some forms of discrimination, and do not allow teenagers
to have a better future. Thus, even though employers are able to gain some
profits, they should not hire people based on their attraction, which will
decrease the quality of workers or teenagers' lives.
